The Shin & Calf Chassis

The two bones of your lower leg

Above the foot, two long bones form the chassis of your lower leg. The tibia is the heavy-duty pillar that carries your weight, and the fibula is the skinny sidekick that helps with balance.

Tibia

aka The Pillar

Your shin bone — the big one. It carries almost all of your weight from your knee down to your ankle. It's the second-longest bone in your body and one of the strongest.

Pillar and sidekick

The tibia and fibula work as a team. The tibia is the pillar — it takes the load. The fibula is the sidekick — it adds stability and gives muscles a place to attach. Together, they connect your knee to your ankle and keep you standing tall.

Mr. Bones says: I'm a fictional skeleton, not a doctor! This is for learning and fun. If anything hurts, stop and tell a grown-up you trust.
